Negative taken of the Joseph Booker family of Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas from the book "How I Succeeded In My Business" by Rev. A.H. Miller published in 1911. Included in the photograph are back row (left to right): Helen M., Carrie J., Jos. Robert, Mattie A. and William A.; and front row: President Jos. A., Baby James H., Mrs. Mary C., Walter M. and Sarah A. Joseph A. Booker was born in December 26, 1859 in Ashley County, Arkansas, near "Old Portland." Orphaned by the age of three, he was raised by his maternal grandmother. When he was twelve years old he began teaching in the night school on the plantation, did farm work and later attended the first rural schools in Ashley County. At age sixteen he "converted" and was licensed by his church to preach. His desire was to become a teacher and preacher. He attended Branch Normal College (now University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas in 1878 and graduated from the Nashville Institute (Roger Williams University) on May 26, 1886. He was ordained a minister, returned to Arkansas and was elected president of Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock in October of 1887. He served 39 years as president of Arkansas Baptist College. Joseph A. Booker died in the fall of 1926. Joseph A. Booker married Mrs. Mary C. Booker (b. January 1866 in Alabama). Joseph Booker daughters born in Arkansas include Helen M. Booker (December 1896), Carrie J. Booker (b. July 1891), Mattie A. Booker (b. July 1889) and Sarah A. Booker (b. 1904). Joseph Booker sons born in Arkansas include Joseph Robert Booker (b. September 1893), William A. Booker (b. September 1899), Walter M. Booker (b. 1907) and James H. Booker (b. ca. 1910).
